Intern members are graduates of accredited medical or osteopathic schools who are engaged in their first year of residency training. This membership class is specifically tailored for those beginning their post-graduate training in neurology, providing essential resources and support during this critical phase.
Junior Membership
Junior membership is designed for graduates who are completing their residency training in neurology or Ph.D. students involved in post-doctoral research training. This category helps junior members enhance their clinical and research skills through various AAN resources and networking opportunities.
Advanced Care Practitioner Membership

Researcher members are professionals who have committed their careers to advancing neuroscience through research. This membership offers access to cutting-edge research publications, conferences, and collaboration opportunities within the neurology research community.
Physician Affiliate Membership
Physician affiliates are physicians practicing in specialties other than neurology or professionals in related fields. This membership class, available both in the United States and internationally, provides access to AAN's extensive resources and professional network.
Neurologist Membership
This category is for physicians fully trained in neurology and board-certified by recognized bodies such as the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (AOBNP), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the Collège des médecins du Québec. Neurologist membership is available both domestically and internationally.
Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN)
The FAAN designation represents the highest and most respected class of membership, awarded to board-certified neurologists and research neuroscientists who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in teaching, clinical practice, administration, and/or research. The fellowship status is awarded through a rigorous, multi-step process involving nominations, review by the AAN Membership Application Review Subcommittee, and endorsement by the AAN Executive Committee. Fellows are entitled to use the post-nominal title "FAAN," with international fellows referred to as Corresponding Fellows.
