Established in 1992 as the Industrial Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, KIIT, or the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, has evolved into a premier institution offering a diverse range of academic programs. With a vision to impart quality education and foster innovation, KIIT provides 34 undergraduate, 32 postgraduate, 10 integrated, 11 Ph.D., and 7 postdoctoral research programs across various fields such as science and engineering, medical science, management, law, film and media, humanities, yoga, and sports.
Admissions to the B.Tech. programs at KIIT are primarily merit-based, relying on the results of the KIITEE exam. However, there are also management quota seats available, which can be secured by paying higher admission fees than the standard rate.
In 2017, the institute underwent a name change to Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, complying with a request from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to remove the term "University" from the name due to its status as a deemed university. KIIT is a part of the KIIT Society, which is estimated to have a net worth of ₹10,000 Crores (approximately US$1.3 billion) as of 2020.
Recognized by India's Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) as a deemed university in 2004, KIIT attained Category A status in 2014. Furthermore, in 2019, it was honored as an Institute of Eminence by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The institute has also received Tier-1 accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation.
In terms of innovation and self-financing, KIIT was ranked as India's best private university in ARIIA 2021. This recognition underscores its commitment to excellence in education and research, as well as its significant contributions to innovation and entrepreneurship in the academic realm. KIIT continues to uphold its reputation as a leading institution for higher education and research in India.
