Founding and Early History

The Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge was founded in 1828 by Joseph Livesey's Temperance Society. The society was established following a pledge made by seven Preston working men to abstain from alcohol, their names commemorated on a plaque in the university's library. This initiative marked the beginning of a long tradition of educational and social reform.

Early Expansion

Initially housed in a classical-revivalist building on Cannon Street, the institute saw significant growth under the endowment of local lawyer Edmund Robert Harris, who passed away in 1877. Harris's contributions enabled the institute to expand, leading to the purchase and demolition of houses on nearby Regent Street to make way for new buildings. This expansion transformed the institute into a regional center for the arts and sciences, enhancing its role and influence within the community.

The Victoria Jubilee Technical School

In 1897, as part of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the institute's trustees commissioned the Victorian/Edwardian architect Henry Cheers to design the "Victoria Jubilee Technical School." This building, later known as the Harris Institute and now the Harris Building, aimed to provide technical education to local youths. The foundation stone was laid in July 1895. Remarkably advanced for its time, the building was powered entirely by electricity, reflecting the institute's commitment to innovation and progress.

Transition to Harris Art College and Beyond

The institute continued to evolve, becoming the Harris Art College in 1932. This change marked a shift towards a more specialized focus on the arts, accompanied by further expansion. In 1952, it was renamed the Harris College, broadening its academic offerings. By 1973, it had transitioned to Preston Polytechnic, reflecting its growing status and range of programs. This name was changed again to Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984, indicating its regional importance and comprehensive educational scope.

University of Central Lancashire

In 1992, the institution achieved full university status and was renamed the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). This milestone marked its transformation into a prominent higher education institution. The university's first chancellor was Sir Francis Kennedy, succeeded by Sir Richard Evans in 2001. In 2016, Ranvir Singh became the new chancellor, continuing the tradition of distinguished leadership.
